Arthur Patching
"Who was actually pushing the switch? I was, but he kept insisting. I
told him "No, " but he said you got to keep going. I told him it's time we
stopped.....
Why didn't you just stop? He wouldn't let me. I wanted to stop. I kept
insisting to stop, but he said "No..."
Why didn't you just disregard what the experimenter said? He says it's
got to go on, the experiment."
(Milgram 1965, 128-9)
My Work explores and questions the body objectified through
medicine. The Trust we place in medical practice- playing the role of
the guinea pig, thereby evolving non-consensual human
experimentation. The experimenter seen as the menace is unknown,
often only seen gloved. The pieces play with ambiguity and are cold,
clinical, uncanny and almost alien.
I work primarily with Film, which these days is an easily acessible
medium to explore. I feel it encapsulates my ideas. The work is
projected, which arouses a more encompassing feeling to the work. I
am seduced by it's engaging quality-the capability to draw the viewer
into a fictitious experience. I am overwhelmed by it, almost overtaken
by it. In the words of Frank Capra,
"Film is a disease, When it infects your bloodstream, it takes over
as the number one hormone; it bosses the enzymes; directs the
pineal gland; plays lago to your psyche, as with heroin, the
antidote to film is more film."
